does anyone have step by step instructions for this and the syntax needed. I want to double check that I'm doing it right, but with no guide I'm not sure what is wrong, except that it doesn't work for me.

Everything is explained in the plugin
Where are you using it (article, module VM,Kunena)? Joomla version?
Explain what you're doing so we can tell what you're doing wrong

To me the best modus operandi to test would be

without spaces after and before accolades
