Redownload 1.0.2, there was a typo erro in the url.

For the Activity Stream to show correctly you must enable the memorizr plugin for Jomsocial.

I have installed version 1.0.2 but the stream shows exactly the same as before

Yes, but you should ask Jomsocial team why the custom css is not working
In the meanwhile, add the css code I provided you in any other css file your tamplate is loading.
